Food insensitivity can cause variety of symptoms

Into my office walked Judy. She was discouraged and disheartened by her current state of health. She had suffered for years with fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, fatigue, depression, sleep difficulties and gastrointestinal distress. She was on a long list of medications that only seemed to offer a little relief, and was desperately looking for another alternative to help her feel better. After carefully reviewing her case, I made one of the most life-changing recommendations - though at the time she did not know it. Due to her level of fatigue, I knew I would have to start slowly. Instead of recommending a full elimination diet that consists of eight to ten different foods, I decided to only have Judy remove one food from her diet entirely, and I recommended a few supplements to support digestion. I asked her to remove gluten. The thought of removing gluten overwhelmed her at first, but she knew she had to at least try. A month later she returned to my office feeling fantastic; most of her symptoms had disappeared. Her fibromyalgia only bothered her once in a while, she had only two migraines in the last month - a vast improvement from having them daily - her depression had lifted, she was sleeping better, most of her gastrointestinal symptoms had resolved, and her energy had improved, although she thought there was still room for improvement. She was just stunned that all of this improved after she committed herself to a completely gluten-free diet. She asked why food would create all those symptoms.

I've been going to basketball games forever. I love the game, and I've enjoyed every minute of my involvement in the sport. My daughter and son each played on teams that won sectional championships and advanced to the New York state final four. I have a brother who's won 400-plus games as a coach at the college and high school levels and nieces who are playing now. For as long as I can remember, basketball has been an enjoyable part of my life.

The Parenting Place blog is a place where parents can share stories and advice, and perhaps most importantly, ask questions of each other.
