WEEDSPORT - Members of the Weedsport community skimming the classified section of Sunday's Citizen may have done a double take at the education job listings.
Between entries for positions at BOCES and the Fayetteville-Manlius school district was an ad that Warrior faithful knew was going to come eventually; an advertisement for a new Weedsport varsity football coach.
"In short, I decided to step aside and let somebody else take over the program," said Cal Mosher, who has coached the Warriors for the past five seasons.
With Mosher at the helm, Weedsport won the 2004 New York Class D state championship last November by defeating Tuckahoe 22-21. The Warriors compiled a 47-5 record over Mosher's five seasons, and won four Onondaga High School League titles, two Section III titles and the one state championship.
He will remain Weedsport's athletic director, and dismissed rumors that he is leaving the district for a football coaching position at West Genesee High School. According to the ad in The Citizen, the deadline for applicants for the head coaching position is Feb. 18.
"We've advertised it," Mosher said. "We'll take a look at the candidates and decide what is best for the students as far as trying to find the best coach for us."
Fans hoping that Mosher will change his minds and return to the sideline shouldn't hold their breath.
"I try to be a decisive person, so I've made the decision to step aside," he said.
"And that's that."
Recently, Mosher was named co-Coach of the Year by the Central New York chapter of the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame.
"I think that winning this award is a direct reflection on you having a good season and an outstanding football team," he said after winning the award. "So I really accepted this award on behalf of the Weedsport football team, because you receive a coach of the year award when your team does exceptionally well. That, of course, is based on your players."
Mosher began his coaching career at Section IV's Sidney Central High School, and has also coached at Section V's Cuba High School (now Cuba-Rushford High School) and Alfred University.
