Keuka College offers new program
Keuka College is now offering a masters of science degree program at six different sites including the Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, Amot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, and Cayuga Community College in Auburn.
The program, which debuted in February 2003 with eight students at a single location, now has more than 55 students among the six sites. According to Keuka officials, the college's master of science program meets the needs of supervisors and managers by focusing on leadership skills.
Students take classes just one night per week and to complete a degree requires 16 months.

beauty pageant
The Fingerlakes Mall hosts the Sunburst Beauty Pageant and Baby Contest at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20.
The baby contest is for boys and girls up to 3 years old, and the beauty contest is for girls ages 4 to 27.
Everyone receives a trophy. Entry forms may be picked up at the Fingerlakes Mall customer service center near the main mall entrance near JC Penney.

Siena sponsors writing contest
Students from public and private schools around New York are invited to enter the Siena College Program for Sustainable Land Use Writing Contest. "Changing Landscapes: People and the Environment" is the this year's topic. The deadline is March 18.
Siena College encourages submissions that address how individuals and communities are using rural and urban land. Papers addressing suburban sprawl, urban revitalization, agriculture, architecture, planning, transportation policy, landfills, toxic waste issues, or the "loss of community" are particularly encouraged.
Entries should be no more the 1,500 words and may be entered in one of two categories: creative writing and analytical writing. There are two first-prize awards of $300.

USDA changes its procedures
The federal Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency has changed its procedures to allow perennial farmers to request a yield determination in instances of decreased production because of certain adverse weather conditions.
Farmers must request the determination from their crop insurance agent by March 6.
This change may be especially beneficial to New York's apple and grape crops, which historically have significant production swings due to varying growing conditions, according to state Commissioner of Agriculture Nathan Rudgers.
Groundcover sale taking orders
The Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding its 34th annual spring tree seedling and groundcover sale.
Orders are being taken now through April 29, with pick-up on May 6. Supplies are limited - order early for best selection.
For an order form and description brochure, call the soil and water office at 252-4171 or stop by the office on County House Road in Sennett. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
