AUBURN - Richard J. Schwartzwalder Sr., 81, of 22 Maple St., Auburn, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Richard was born in Buffalo on Sept. 4, 1923, the son of Joseph and Loretta Krumm Schwartzwalder. He was a graduate of St. Alphonsus Parochial School, attended Auburn Middle Schools, graduated from high school at Cook Academy, Montour Falls, N.Y., and graduated from Niagara University in 1950.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had taken part in the invasion of Normandy. A former employee of Carrier Corporation, he had retired from the Cayuga County Department of Social Services in 1975. He was a member of VFW Post 1975 and St. Alphonsus Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Houghtaling Schwartzwalder, whom he married on June 27, 1953, and their children: Richard J. Schwartzwalder Jr., of Auburn; David B. Schwartzwalder and Susan, of Auburn; and Ann Schwartzwalder and Jody Blouch, of Kittery, Maine; grandchildren Sara, Mary Beth and Megan, of Auburn, and Maya, of Kittery, Maine; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and sister and brother-in-law, Warren and Marion Calif of Massachusetts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Louis Vasile, pastor of St. Alphonsus Church, as celebrant. Internment will be in Throopsville Rural Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Farrell's Funeral Service, Inc., 84 South St., Auburn.
