Staring pleads not guilty to charge
Earl S. Staring Jr. pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct at his arraignment in Auburn City Court Friday.
Staring, 59, of Auburn, was arrested after he disrupted an Auburn City Council meeting last week.
His next court date is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 18.
Hospice to host bereavement group
The Hospice of the Finger Lakes will host a bereavement support group. The group, called Coping with Sudden or Traumatic Death: Understanding the Hurt and Easing the Pain, will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays.
It will run from Sept. 6 through Sept. 27, at the building, 1130 Corporate Drive in Auburn.
Participants will talk about concerns and address issues surrounding a sudden or traumatic death. The programs is free.

Heart Expo to be held at AMH Sept. 22
People can participate in the annual Heart Expo from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
The event will offer free cholesterol testing during the first half, free pulmonary function tests, and blood pressure screenings. Restaurants and food producers will provide samples of heart-healthy food.
Health care professionals and pharmaceutical company representatives will present information.
Programs for children include cartoon characters, tours of a Mercy Flight helicopter, a TLC ambulance and fire engine.
A grandparent and grandchildren walk will run from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and photos will be taken.

Motorcyclist injured in Skaneateles crash
A motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash on Stump Road in the Town of Skaneateles Friday.
State police in Elbridge said William O. Pitcher was riding a 1977 Harley Davidson west on Stump Road at about 6:22 p.m. Friday when the motorcycle went off the south shoulder of the road.
Pitcher was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was in critical condition Friday night, police said.
Poetry series to start Sept. 28
The Auburn Public Theater and Poets & Writers Inc. will host its first semi-annual poetry series in September.
Patricia Roth Schwartz will be the first writer featured in the “An Evening with a Poet” series, which will include a performance and workshop. The Waterloo resident is an award-winning poet celebrating the release of her most recent book.
A teacher with Writers & Books Inc., Rochester, Schwartz also volunteers as an inmate instructor at the Auburn Correctional Facility.
The reading is slated for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn, with a question-and-answer session and book signing to follow. Schwartz will host her “Freeing the Writer Within” workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29.
The cost for the workshop is $25 and $20 for senior citizens and students with identification.
A $5 donation to the Auburn Public Theater is suggested for the reading.
Electric board to meet Sept. 12
The Auburn Electric Board of Examiners will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the conference room in Memorial City Hall, 24 South St. in Auburn.
