Chiefs pick up defensive intensity in shutout of Waverly

Miriam Larson-Koester and Lianna May scored both goals for the Southern Cayuga girls soccer team in a 2-0 defeat of Waverly on Thursday.
Beth Rocker and Ashley Bergenstock were credited with strong midfield play, while Nicole Hoey, Jenna Lawrence, Ashley Robin and Marissa Burns led the defensive effort.

Felicia Allen helped record the shutout as well, with 14 saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

Moravia 2, Spencer-Van Etten 1

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Blue Devils' Emily Dusseau scored on a Nicole LeFever assist to tie up the game. Kelley Lloyd scored on a pass from Emily Lockett to give Moravia the win.

Ashley Shea earned three saves.

Moravia (5-3) is at Newark Valley on Wednesday.

Cazenovia 5, Weedsport 0

Kaitlin Hammersley recorded 11 saves in the net for the Warriors.

Weedsport (7-2) hosts Fayetteville-Manlius on Monday.

Rome Free Academy 2, Auburn 0

Sarah Reese had 10 saves for the Maroons. Christine Desocio played well at midfield, and Jamie Martellaro led the defense.

Auburn (0-6-1) hosts Watertown on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

Corcoran 3, Auburn 0

Katie Brown led the Maroons with three kills, one block and one assist in the team's 18-25, 15-25, 19-25 loss.

Emily Felter recorded two kills and one ace, Eric Querns had two kills and four assists. Laura Barnard had two aces and Megan Cahill hit one ace and two kills.

SWIMMING

Southern Springs 61, Odessa-Montour 33

Kaitlin Rejman, Kathryn Carter, Carly Pearson and Stephanie Morse finished first in the 200 medley relay (2:12.45). Pearson also won the 100 butterfly (1:36.68).

Rebekah Ortquist earned first in the 100 freestyle (1:02.97), Devon Balk came in second in the 500 freestyle (7:07.75) and Sarah Kilser won the 100 breast stroke (1:22.95).

Rose Mandel won the 50 freestyle (30.91), Erin Webber placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:15.16).

The 200 freestyle relay ream also finished first (1:54.86), as did the 400 freestyle relay team to conclude the meet (4:33.38).
