Hits & Misses

HIT: To the dedication of new buildings at Wells College and Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.
Wells has a new science building, Stratton Hall, which helps the campus in its efforts to continue growing as an institution of higher learning.

Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES got an entire new campus, a state-of-the-art facility that offers its students the latest in technology and more than enough space to learn the skills they will need to earn future jobs.

To see such investments locally in education speaks well for the entire area.

MISS: To the rise in the rate of violent crime in Cayuga County for the first six months of 2007. Overall crime did go down in the county but an increase in violent crimes, the worst kind, by 73.3 percent, is something residents should be concerned with.

Hopefully the year's last six months will see a decrease in Cayuga County.

HIT: To a diabetes awareness day held this week in Moravia.

Family Health New York of Central New York organized the event, allowing people to learn more about a serious illness and what they can do to prevent and treat it.

As many as 5 million Americans are unaware that they currently have diabetes, and proper treatment is essential because the disease can progress to the point where it completely debilitates - or kills.

MISS: To a possible rise in Thruway tolls. Considering that tolls just went up last year, the first increase in nearly 20 years, it is shocking to consider they may be going up again so soon.

Increases hurt everyone, especially trucking firms and other businesses that are already dealing with higher fuel prices. The Thruway Authority says the likely toll increase is a result of slower-than-expected traffic growth, if tolls do go up, then they'll really see a decrease in traffic.

" Avoiding riding the Thruway might save you a toll but costs more in gas. What is the gain. You spend more and the state loses revenue. A no-win proposition. "

" The toll increase also hit the prisons! I remember the prison buses always drove on the NYS Thruway. Now they take Routes 5 & 20. Hello? Knock Knock NYS? Your own agencies aren't using your own Thruway??? "
