GARDEN CITY - A mechanic at a pudding factory has died of bacterial meningitis, the third such death on Long Island this year, health officials said Monday. None of the deaths are believed to be related.
The latest victim, identified only as a 58-year-old man from Levittown, died on Saturday after feeling ill for several days, said Dr. Maria Torroella Carney, the Nassau County health commissioner. The man, who worked as a machine mechanic at Kozy Shack Enterprises, left work early on Friday and was hospitalized Saturday after relatives found him unconscious in his home.
Carney said an investigation “did not reveal any close contacts through his work environment” and said there was no danger of contamination at the factory. She noted meningitis is not spread by casual contact.
Bob Striano, president and CEO of Kozy Shack Enterprises, Inc., said the company has been in communication with health officials. He said although they have assured him there is no risk, the company, “will facilitate proactive health screening.”
