Auburn needs information before school district vote

Thursday, May 15, 2008 11:56 AM EDT

The community should have accurate information on the impending Auburn Enlarged City School District proposition vote in June. One fact is there is not going to be a new concession stand built.
There is a very nice one already at Holland Stadium, which is used during varsity games that are played there. With the upgrades to the stadium and more games at all levels played there, the concession stand will be open for those games also.

Another fact is that there is not going to be a press box built. This is not an instructional area and is not going to be included in the state aid.

The issues with the turf being unsafe because it had lead in it; the fact is, it is the nylon turf which is the one that has high levels of lead, not the new synthetic turf. Please visit www.syntheticturfcouncil.org for more information.

Auburn needs to be open-minded and get the accurate facts before the impending proposition vote. The proposition which will be going for vote in June is a good one for all the children and the community of Auburn. We will not have another opportunity like this one again. Please vote yes.

" First--where is it proven that "students involved in school sports are the overall better students"? Obviously you do not interact with students on a daily basis. Secondly, how many times does it take of people saying no to the turf before the school district finally gets the point? I find it incredibly disturbing that this is the biggest issue this school board is concerned with. What about safety of staff and students? Overall quality of education? This is one of many reasons why I will be moving out of the city before my child is school aged. I do not want him going to a school that only cares about resources for its athletic programs(actually, just one program). "

" It is known that students involved in school sports are the overall better students, the ones that are more likely to care about the community. Those ones are the ones who run the future - here in Auburn, in other states or even in the world. We do see plenty of hardcore egoistic people. Their good education does good for themselves but a community (WE) need people that think ahead and do all we possibly can to make Auburn a better place to live and stay. That will have positive effects on the whole community and other areas will get better also. If we vote no, we say no to our communities - again that's you and me - future. "

" People keep saying that "....we will never have a chance like this again." Seems to me that this comes up every year. NO TO TURF!! We do not need it. We do not need to have the entire cost of replacing it in the future. We do not need to spend money on elaborate upgrades to the stadium. We need to get that money back into the hands of the people that will use it for what it is really needed for, education. Not sports. "

" You are so right Mrs Mizro, the community needs CORRECT INFORMATION, NOT MIS-INFORMATION like your editorial.
I can assure you that the CONCESSION STAND is still proposed, the trouble is it is now costing $596,000, with all the extras, like locker rooms and bath rooms. The press box may, and I do mean "MAY" be excluded because (according to JD) they are unable to list the press box as a class room. But knowing this board as I do, I am sure they will twist and turn and wiggle and squirm and build the darn thing regardless. VOTE NO everyone send the budget back to them to be re-worked.
If the President of the BOOSTERS are going out for the proposals it will be up to you to OUT VOTE THEM. Send them a message loud and clear, the recession, the economy, is a higher priority than TURF and Ed's wish list "
