Warriors earn another league title

The Weedsport boys track and field team won their division for the second straight year as they defeated Faith Heritage, 110-30 and Manlius-Pebble Hill, 127-10 in a dual meet on Wednesday.
Zachary Nevidomsky led the Warriors with three first place finishes in the long jump (19-0.75), the triple jump (38-5.75) and the high jump (5-6).

Jake Ekross recorded two wins in the shot put (42-9) and the discus (109-5.5).

Jim Bos also finished first in two events, the 800m (2:05) and as a leg in the 4x800m relay (9:15) along with Andrew Smith, Justin Spencer and Zachary Brown.

Brown also won the 400m (55.7).

Mike Greer had two first place finishes in the 1600m (5:10) and the 3200m (10:51).

Also placing first for the Warriors was Jordan Petrocci in the 110m hurdles (17.2), Abe Jordan won the 400m hurdles (65.2) and the 4x100m relay team (9:15) with Jesse Schooley, Ethan Gillette, Tim Roden and Tim Hansen.

Weedsport (7-0) moves on to the Patriot League Championship Meet in Pulaski Thursday.

Cato-Meridian 70, Port Byron 67

The Panthers picked up a win in the 4x800m relay (9:40), the 110m hurdles (19.4), the 400m hurdles (68.3) and the high jump (5-4).

Also winning for Port Byron was Christian Cobb in the 1600m (5:12), Steve Cuff won the 400m (55.8) and Travis Snyder placed first in the 100m (12.3).

The Blue Devils earned first place in the 4x100m relay (47.0), the long jump (16-1), Andrew Gillis won the triple jump (38-10) and the 200m (24.6), Joe Mattice finished first in the 800m (2:22), Ben Mesmer ended on top for the 3200m (11:11), A.J. Rothenberg took the win in the shot put (38-3) and David Quinn won the discus (83-11).

Jordan-Elbridge 72, Bishop Ludden 69

Jordan-Elbridge 101, Hannibal 40

Pat Cooper led the Eagles, finishing first in the shot put (39-7) and second in the discus (96-6.5).

Jake Griffin placed second in the 400m (54.7) and was a member of the first place finishing 4x400m relay (3:48.0) with Donato DiRenzo, Nick Piedmonte and Carlin Coomey. DiRenzo was also a member of the first place 4x800m relay team (8:59.9) with Jeff Donohue, Cody Stanton and Greg Bader and finished second in the 800m (2:12.5).

Stanton picked up a second place finish in the 3200m (10:30.4) and Donohue finished second in the 1600m (4:52.6). Dylan Kirk finished first in the pole vault (9-0) and John Flynn had a first place win in the high jump (5-4) and a second place finish in the 110m hurdles (20.0).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Auburn 97, Nottingham 43

Marissa Rescott led the Maroons with three first place finishes in the 400m hurdles (76.9), the 800m (2:38.7) and as a part of the 4x400m relay team (4:31.7), along with Liz Mahoney, Tiffany Parker and Patricia Fleischman.

Mahoney also won the 1500m (5:37), Fleischman finished on top in the 400m (64.1) and Parker won the long jump (14-3).

Laura Simmons won the shot put (30-5) and the discus (61-8). Meghan Guzewicz had two first place wins in the 3000m (12:46.8) and as a leg of the 4x800m relay with Abigail Reese, Lindsey Guzewicz and Amber Kukiela. Katie Brown won the high jump (4-6) and Hanora Barron took first in the 100m hurdles (20.4) to finish out the Maroon winners.

Auburn (1-5) next heads to Central Square for the CNYCL League meet Monday.

Cato-Meridian 67, Port Byron 65

The Blue Devils' 4x400m relay (4:43.3) missed sectionals by three seconds, but still finished first to give the team the win over Port Byron.

Leading Cato-Meridian was Somer Stuter who won the 100m hurdles (18.7) and the triple jump (27-6). Rebecca Myers won the 1500m (5:54), Tara Pickard picked up a win in the 400m hurdles (1:23.5), Aubrey Campbell won the high jump (4-8), Kristine DeLattre finished on top in the discus (83-2) and Shelby Klaben won the shot put (28-1).

Also winning for the Blue Devils was the 4x400m relay team of Autumn Bullard, Campbell, Erin Grant and Jessica Griffiths.

Pacing the Panthers was Kate Riley with three first place finishes in the 100m (13.8), the 200m (29.0) and as a leg in the 4x100m relay (55.4), along with Brittney Bigness, Ashley Leja and Mindy Meyers. Meyers also won the 400m (57.9) and Leja placed first in the long jump (13-1).

Also landing on top for Port Byron was Jenna Fronce in the 800m (2:47.5) and in the 4x800m relay (11:27) with Jen Locastro, Katie Wyckoff and Felicia Darrow. Locastro also recorded the win in the 3000m (13:08.7).

Weedsport 85, Faith Heritage 54

Weedsport 90, Manlius Pebble Hill 47

Amy Sanchez led the Warriors winning the 1500m (5:55), the long jump (11-11) and ran a leg in the first place 4x800m relay (11:35) with Erin Daly, Alyssa O'Bryan and Ashley Edmunds. O'Bryan also finished first in the 3000m (12:49) and Daly won the 800m (2:42).

Also winning for Weedsport was Christy Quinn in the 200m (31.2) and ran as a part of the first place 4x100m relay team with Chelsea Paquette, Sharra Brentlinger and Nicole Greer.

Kaitlin Hammersley won three events, the shot put (28-11), the discus (80-11) and the pole vault (8-0).

For discus, Sarah Scida took second place and Allison Rosa finished third, for the shotput, Katie Schlegal earned second and Rosa again took third.

GIRLS GOLF

Auburn 159, Rome Free Academy 172

Auburn 159, Nottingham 196

Megan Cahill was the medalist of the match shooting a 32.

Also leading the Maroons was Katherine Tonzi and Kaylee Roeschlaub, who both carded a 42 and Cristina Camardo finished with a 43.

Auburn (9-3) hosts Fayetteville-Manlius Monday.

Skaneateles 213, Marcellus 234

Skaneateles 213, Chittenango 236

The Lakers' Hillary Fenner was the medalist for the match carding a 50. Bridgette Clary and Ellie Youle both swung a 53.

The Lakers (6-2) play Westhill Monday.

BOYS GOLF

Manlius-Pebble Hill 226, Cato-Meridian 237

Leading the Blue Devils was Brandon Bosco who shot a 43, while Marc Walton carded a 47, both Todd Wilcox and Paul Barbagallo earned a 48 and David Czajkowski ended with a 51.

The Blue Devils (1-10) swing against Fabius-Pompey today.

Port Byron 230, Weedsport 231

The Warriors lost a close one, led by Matt Short who carded a 42.

Chris Johnson and Jason Ryan both shot a 44, Drew Lane earned a 48, Cody Fabian scored a 53 and Jake DeChick ended with a 58.

Leading the Panthers (6-7) was Andy Leary, who shot a 42, Josh Malenick recorded a 43, Dan Wilkinson tallied a 45, Frank Smart carded a 48, Dan O'Hara finished with a 52 and J.T. Debois ended with a 53.

The Warriors (7-5) play their last season match at Bishop Grimes Friday.

SOFTBALL

Port Byron 11, Bishop Grimes 5

Leading the Panthers was Nica Dare going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and two runs.

Kara Pitcher was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and a home run, Shelby Gilbert went 3-for-4 with one run scored, Melissa Deyo was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a triple and one run, Britney Helmer roped a hit with an RBI and a run, Morgan Kimak hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Sherri Dewitt finished 1-for-4, adding a run.

Helmer threw in the circle for Port Byron with three strikeouts, one walk and allowed nine hits.

Auburn 7, Nottingham 0

All three Maroons seniors played pivotal roles as the Maroons shut out Nottingham.

Senior Brittany Babcock tossed a one-hitter and struck out six.

Her classmates, Lauren Fedyshyn had three hits and a double, while Shannon McCormick had two hits and two runs. Junior Kelly Grinnell added three hits with a double and two runs.

Defensively, Stefanie Spinney played strong for the Maroons, helping to preserve the shut out when she threw a runner out at first from right field.

Auburn (10-8) hosts West Genesee today.

Trumansburg 7, Moravia 2, eight innings

Jessica Kehoe pitched for the Blue Devils, racking up five stikeouts and one walk.

At the plate for Moravia, Hannah Mackey went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI, Haley Potter was 1-for-4 with a double and a run and Kaylee Langtry also went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

The Blue Devils (4-13) host Dryden Friday.

Dryden 4, Union Springs 2

Jillian Thomas threw six strikeouts and gave up five hits for the Wolves.

At the plate Thomas had one RBI, while Susan Nanna posted two hits and one RBI.

The Wolves (11-8) play at Odessa Montour Friday.

Pulaski 23, Cato-Meridian 3

The Blue Devils made 14 errors and only posted three hits against one of the top pitchers in the state in Ashley Snyder, who struck out 19 Blue Devils batters.

Ashley Thomas threw all seven innings for Cato-Meridian, with six strikeouts, four walks and allowing 12 hits.

Freshman Amy Thomas stood strong at the plate for the Blue Devils with two home runs and all three RBIs.

Also hitting for the Blue Devils was Julia Pratt, who had a base hit.

Cato-Meridian is now 9-8, which is the most wins the program has had in 21 years.

The Blue Devils travel to play Bishop Grimes Friday.

BASEBALL

Trumansburg 4, Moravia 2

The Blue Devils had no errors despite the loss, and led 2-0 until the third inning when they allowed one run.

Taylor Mackey was on the mound for Moravia with four strikeouts, five walks, allowing six hits and four runs.

Defensively performing for the Blue Devils was T.J. Powers who made a tough double play.

At the plate Dillon Langtry, Justin Stanton and Eric Youngs each had a base hit, Youngs also had two RBIs.

The Blue Devils can still win the division with a Marathon loss to Groton Saturday.

Bishop Grimes 6, Port Byron 1

Jake Bennett recorded the loss on the mound for the Panthers with four strikeouts, six walks, allowing seven hits and four runs (two earned).

Relieving Bennett on the mound was Matt Janusz, who threw two walks while allowing one hit and two runs.

At the plate, Janusz went 2-for-3 with a double and Bennett and Tyler Quanbeck both batted 1-for-2.

Auburn 16, Nottingham 1

Freshman Andy Sanders stood on the mound six innings for the Maroons throwing nine strikeouts, one walk, allowing five hits and one run.

Alex Gatewood made his pitching debut for the Maroons, cleaning up the seventh inning.

Batting for Auburn was Gavin Gleason going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs, Bob Buckley was also 2-for-2 with one run and two RBIs, Brian Brazee went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Noah Donch was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

“They played a solid game with only one error,” Maroons head coach TJ Gamba said. “Everybody played and they played well.”

The Maroons (13-5) will bring out the bats at West Genesee today.

Weedsport 4, Faith Heritage 3

Trailing 3-0 after four innings, the Warriors tied the game on Tuesday in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Tony Piascik.

Leading off in the sixth, Bryce Leitten hit a solo home run to give the Warriors the lead.

Leitten also went the distance on the mound, allowing just five hits, while striking out six.

Jordan Stott went 1-for-2 at the plate, with a double, Brian Quigley also had a hit and Gavin Johnston adden an RBI.

The Warriors close out their regular season in Port Byron Friday.
