A journey that began in the fall for three local Odyssey of the Mind teams ended Tuesday with strong finishes at the 2008 World Finals at the University of Maryland.
Two teams from the Skaneateles Central School District and one from the Weedsport Central School District traveled to Maryland for the competition held May 31 through June 3 and surpassed many schools by creating and performing “solution skits” to one of five problems created by the Odyssey of the Mind organization, an international scholastic problem-solving competition involving participants from elementary school through college.

Solving the “Tee Structure” problem, the Weedsport High School's Division III squad took 10th place, surpassing 36 other teams both domestic #- Arkansas, Oklahoma, California, Florida and Illinois #- and international #- South Korea, Singapore, Germany and Mexico.

The Skaneateles Middle School's Division II, Team A team, solving the “Odyssey Road Rally” problem, took 16th place out of 43, and the State Street Elementary School's Division I, Team A team, solving “The Eccentrics!” problem, garnered 21st place out of 38.

Teams formed in the beginning of the academic year in preparation for the Region 11 competition held at the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services March 15. All three teams garnered first-place wins in that competition.

The teams moved on to the state competition held at Binghamton University March 29. The Weedsport High School and State Street Elementary teams took second place and Skaneateles Middle School team took first place in their respective competitions, qualifying for the World Finals.
