SYRACUSE - Police are investigating the disappearance of a stillborn baby's body from an upstate New York hospital last week.
St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse has not been able to find the body of Love Dear Lee.

The infant's mother, 20-year-old Jasmine Logan, delivered the baby boy stillborn May 28 after a 22-week pregnancy.

“The hospital has been very cooperative. They are the ones who contacted us. They have been very cooperative in giving us access to information and to people who we needed to interview,” Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel said Wednesday.

“At this point, in the investigation we don't see any criminality involved ... but there is the loss of a stillborn, and we need to ascertain how that happened,” Miguel said.

“St. Joseph's community deeply regrets this entire incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. This matter is under intense investigation,” the hospital said in a prepared statement.

The state Department of Health is aware of the incident and is in discussion with the hospital, said agency spokesman Jeffrey Hammond.

After the still birth, the family asked for an autopsy, said Jimmie Smiley, a family spokesman and bishop at New Birth Fellowship Ministries.

But when funeral director Charles Garland of Garland Bros. Funeral Home went to pick up the child following the autopsy, hospital staff could not find the baby's body.

“They lost the baby. It's unbelievable, but true,” Smiley said.

The family plans to carry on with a service planned for Friday at the New Birth Fellowship, he said.

“It's going to be very difficult,” Smiley said of Friday's eulogy. “I don't know what to say. What do you say in a situation like this?”

“The parents are obviously very, very upset,” said Richard Priest, a lawyer representing the mother and father, Lamar Lee, 19. “I don't know how it could happen. Before we jump to conclusions, we have to get the facts.”
