The Citizen's readers soon will be able to enjoy their local daily newspaper with breakfast every day of the week. The newspaper today is announcing plans to switch to morning distribution on weekdays.
The change will go into effect with the Monday, Aug. 11 edition. The paper already is delivered and sold on newsstands on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The decision to become a morning newspaper grew out of customer feedback and market research that showed most readers prefer getting their daily newspaper at an earlier time. The move also provides increased value for advertisers.
“Being ‘on the street' seven hours earlier accommodates those that only have time to read us in the morning, and still allows those loyal evening readers to have their paper at their disposal as time allows,” said Rick Emanuel, The Citizen's publisher.
Earlier this spring, The Citizen conducted a market survey to gauge reader and non-reader opinions on newspaper distribution times. The information gathered, along with direct feedback from customers, helped the newspaper's management arrive at the decision.
Emanuel encourages community residents to continue calling and writing with their thoughts and suggestions as the newspaper works toward the conversion date.
“This is a decision driven by the input we've received from the public, and we're eager to hear more thoughts about how to make this change work most effectively,” he said.
The Citizen is owned by Lee Enterprises, a Davenport, Iowa-based company that owns 50 daily newspapers and a joint interest in four others, rapidly growing online sites and more than 300 weekly newspapers and specialty publications in 23 states.
