AUBURN - Forget the kings and queens of yore; Auburn has new royalty that's ascended to the throne.
Scott Polcovich, 19, of Auburn, is more than just a teenager. With a crown affixed to his head and a sash regally draped across his chest, Scott last month was bestowed one of the most prized and sought-after titles in American high schools.
He is Auburn High School's 2008 prom king.
Affected by Down syndrome, Scott said he was shocked and deeply grateful for the award.
“It feels kind of good and special,” he said. “I was very surprised. I was surprised, and it is a big honor.”
Nominated to the King's Court, Scott was ordained with his new title May 17, while having fun at the Auburn Enlarged City School District's high school prom at Emerson Park.
“I was kind of hoping,” he said of becoming prom king. “I was surprised. Like, surprised.”
The night started for Scott at the Sunset Restaurant with his date, Christina Lupo, said his parents, Ron and Karen Polcovich. Scott and Christina then met up with some friends at Hoopes Park, documenting the coming-of-age tradition with cameras at the ready.
And then, off to the main event.
Observing from the back of the reception, Ron and Karen said they were moved by students' reaction, chanting “Scottie, Scottie,” and clapping vigorously, when Scott became prom king.
“It was a proud moment for us,” Ron said, “because that's what you hope for your child. It's great when they get good grades, but when they are accepted like this by their peers, especially with Scott, it is just a great feeling for us.”
Added Karen, “As a parent, if one of our kids was president of the United States, the feeling couldn't have been any better because it was just an incredible moment for us.”
After hearing, “Go Scott! It's your party!” Scott got to lead off a dance with his date, something he said he enjoyed.
But the party didn't end there. He decided to go to Chili's restaurant with his parents for some snacks and dessert. Restaurant staff congratulated Scott on his award - he was still wearing his crown and sash - and shook his hand.
And to complete what was already a great night for Scott, the Chili's night manager took care of the check, on the house.
Scott plans on keeping his crown and sash in his room. At every glance he said he will remember that night when he was crowned.
