Earlier this year, I wrote about recycling in the city of Auburn. I decided to revisit the issue since the curbside collection schedule has changed for city residents.
In the beginning of each year, the city of Auburn releases a Streamline Schedule that informs residents of recyclables.
It also notifies residents on the proper disposal of appliances, yard debris and demolition material.
This year the city of Auburn released a Streamline Update that is effective from June 1 to Dec. 31.
The new Streamline Update brochure has curbside pickup for recyclables on a three-week cycle rather than a four-week cycle.
This week, curbside pickup includes the collection of corrugated cardboard, paper grocery bags, paper egg cartons and the following boxes: cereal, cracker, cake mix, pasta, shoe and tissue boxes. All cardboard must be flattened and tied or containerized.
Next week, July 13, will include newspaper as well as magazines and phonebooks.
The pick up of plastic, glass and metal will be during the week of July 20. At this time No. 1 through 7 plastic bottles (identified by a number inside a triangle of arrows on the bottom of a plastic container), clean aluminum cans, steel or tin food/juice cans and clean food/beverage glass bottles (clear, green or brown glass) will be accepted.
Items that will not be accepted include: motor oil bottles, plastic lids or caps, plastic bags, large catalogs, junk mail, light bulbs, mirrors, cookware or broken glass.
In addition to a new recycling schedule, the city of Auburn is doing a supplemental yard waste collection.
This means that there will be special Saturday collections - yard waste only - for each area of the city. Allowable items for the supplemental collection are:
Brush, must be bundled or tied
Leaves, must be bagged and tied
Grass clippings, must be bagged and tied
To determine the date for your neighborhood, please refer to your Streamline Update.
If you did not receive a Streamline Update it is available at the Auburn Landfill, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County or City Hall.
If you live outside of the city of Auburn or you are a city resident looking for more information regarding general recycling, proper disposal of electronics, tires or household hazardous waste, please call Cornell Cooperative Extension Cayuga County at 255-1183.
