Fourth of July a good time to try veggie burgers

Monday, July 7, 2008 11:36 AM EDT

Whatever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on the Fourth of July were traffic jams and wayward fireworks? According to our government's Meat & Poultry Hotline, this year's top fear is food poisoning by those nasty E. coli and Salmonella bugs lurking in inadequately grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Of course, they don't bother to mention that high-temperature grilling that kills the bugs also forms cancer-causing compounds.
Luckily, a bunch of enterprising food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great variety of healthful, delicious and convenient veggie burgers and soy dogs. These new foods don't harbor nasty pathogens or cancer-causing compounds. They don't even carry cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs, or pesticides. And, they are available in the frozen food section of every supermarket.

This 4th of July offers a great opportunity to declare our independence from the meat industry and to share wholesome veggie burgers and soy dogs with our family and friends.

" Nice add Abram but, prefer real meat. As for killing myself eating it, I'm not worried. I cook my own. No fast food stuff where most of the trouble comes from. You did forget the trouble with the tomatoes? Enjoy your veggie burger with that salad? "

" I had a nice ribeye steak on the 4 th. You can have the tufo burgers and that slop. Its all my opinion. The funny thing is I've seen this same letter in other newspapers. Differnt name of course. I would guess its a PETA pass alone "

" I have the freedom to eat what I choose veggie burger boy! Meat is good if eaten in moderation. The fact that our government establishes meat handling regulations and then provides no funds for inspections is the problem. I will think of you as I down a pile of dogs and burgers this weekend. "

" Abram, no true American would eat anything but hot dogs and hamburgers on the 4th. "
