A boil order will remain in effect at least through Friday for public water use within Throop Water District No. 1.
The Cayuga County Health Department first issued the order Tuesday night after a water main break. Repairs were completed to the line Tuesday, and the first round of testing on water has begun.
Officials from the Cayuga County Health Department said residents should boil their water for at least a minute then let it cool down before use to kill any bacteria. This includes water for brushing teeth, cooking, washing dishes, making ice or for drinking. Residents may also choose to purchase bottled water instead.
The order was issued because it's possible for bacteria to leak into the water while a pipe is being repaired.
The health department will have the water tested for coliform, a bacteria often found in soil, which is an indicator of other harmful organisms, officials said.
