The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating a hydraulic oil spill on Owasco Lake that involved a mower from the state Department of Transportation.
The mower was in the northbound lane Wednesday when it leaked about 25 gallons of fluid between two residential docks at 5151 and 5141 West Lake Road/Route 38 in Fleming.
Diane Carlton, a spokeswoman for the DEC, said the organization was investigating to see if a ruptured hydraulic line caused the spill and if local authorities contacted the DEC in a timely manner.
The Fleming Fire Department and the Auburn Fire Department's HAZMAT team both responded to the scene to contain the spill.
Workers from Op-Tech, an environmental cleaning company based in Syracuse, arrived at 5 a.m. Thursday to begin cleaning a 300-square-foot area containing about 145 square feet of seaweed, Carlton said.
There was no time frame for the completion of the ongoing cleanup, which could be hampered by factors such as bad weather, Carlton said.
