Auburn just can't seem to move in the right direction

Monday, July 14, 2008 11:43 AM EDT

Things are looking very bad for the city of Auburn. I've been talking to recent graduates of college and high school in our city, and all or most of them have said the same thing concerning their hometown.
There are no jobs here, no way to further yourself. The jobs that are here, they don't pay anything. So they are leaving Auburn for other states or cities with more to offer. Crime is the only thing going up, with more drug dealers coming in.

Within the next year, Auburn will lose about 100 people or more, and when that happens, more taxes are levied against those that are left. With the economy the way that it is, everything has gone up in price, not only gas, but food and other things that are needed to survive.

The children don't have any place to go - no recreation centers, no summer jobs - so they start selling drugs, committing robberies and whatever other mischief they can get into, having children at early ages.

No one fights for these things to change and therefore Auburn is no more than a ghost town. There are more police than there are people! If a new recruit comes in, if he's not a team player, he doesn't fit the police profile.

So what do we do about our city? People I talk to say the best thing to do is leave. It doesn't pay to try to get into city hall or politics.

This city is run by those who refuse to bring about growth, or they don't know how to bring growth about. They think the city is fine the way it is.

" I get sick of this crap about the kids have nothing to do. There are parks, movie theaters, arts centers, museums, roller skating, sports leagues, volunteer work, bowling alleys, libraries, a baseball stadium, a swimming pool, YMCA, the lake and many other activities. The lazy bums that want everything handed to them wouldn't take advantage of anything you could offer them. The truly motivated can find a lot to do. In fact I think Auburn is rich in activities compared to other cities across our country. On top of that you have a transit system that can get them there cheaply. Go haunt someone else, but your negative attitude leads me to believe that you were one of those lazy kids that whined about nothing to do. "

" Cherry, do you pay city taxes or does the county take care of the bills? "

" Over the year people want ed the City to provide more and more sevices, with ever increasing tax base for alot of businesses. Now as business leave, we cannot afford all these fringe benefits. The "City" or soon to be town, needs to remove some of the special programs and positions.

The children get in trouble around here more so when I was child because dear old parents and grandparents so effectionately decided to pass laws against things that were commonplace to do. The older generations had their "cake" and now braking the backs of their children and grandchildren with law after law and program after program to support their lifestyles, yet the older generation likes to whine and cry why the youth don't have jobs and seem to be always in trouble...alot of the older generation ( but not all) are all about themselves, and wouldn't dream of giving up anything or giving something real/tangible if takes away from the cushy retirement!

The youth do work hard, just that the older generation is too quick to judge and too hard on the youth when they do fail. Well, ain't being young and learning (and alot of failing) go hand in hand...we learn from our mistakes. "

" I myself have noticed there is nothing for teenagers to do in Auburn other than get into trouble. Why do you think almost every single teenager knows another inside county jail? Nothing else better to do other than get into trouble.
Bad parents Bad community. It wont change. That is what happens when half the town is section 8 single moms and renters. "

" Movedsouth, how you doing? I know she won't answer my question, but I honestly think she has sombody else writing her letters to the editor for her, I listened to her when she ran for city council, she is good at using the race card and complaining about the police and offers nothing positive. Have a good nite. "

" Cherry you are so right. So why do you all go on electing Democrats who claim they will fight for you? Hillary and Chuckie, what a pair! "

" The only way to rebuild Auburn is to polish (restore) the historical sites, spend-shop within Auburn, and PROMOTE YOUR ASSETS (COLLEGE,PRISION, SEWARD-TUBMAN HOMES, BASEBALL PARK,etc.) There is nothing wrong in building a strong restaurant community for your self and visitors. Try convincing the City Council to look into promoting showing classic movies within the community to promote culture and family values. JOBS AND GROWTH DOES FOLLOW WHEN INVESTORS SEES A FAVORABLE MARGET. "

" This letter is just a list of negative urban myths presented by a politician wannabe. The reality is Auburn is moving in a positive direction led by the private sector. With the removal of Dempsey and Latimore and the addition of Palesh, there's a stability in City Hall we haven't seen in fifteen years.

Climb on board all you pessimists, you're about to be taken for a very positive ride. And Cherry...you might want to get out a little more and really open your eyes this time. "

" Cherry Love, Your just a wealth of information, take the blinders off and look out your front door, I don't see many tax payers, but alot of drug dealers and fatherless children running around. Of course you have to get your shots in about the police, but face it Cherry there going to do their job all over the city, not just the area you live in. An honest question to you Cherry, How much did you pay in City,School, and county tax? "

brew1234 wrote on Jul 13, 2008 12:42 AM:

" The problem in Auburn is a pervading stench of pessimism and negativity. There is a start of a renewal in the rebuilding and development in the downtown area. The Starlight foundation and other developers are starting to make plans for residential and business development. The big factories are never coming back but retail, restaurant, and arts businesses have potential to revive Auburn. Those who can look to a brighter future can share in the rebirth of this unpolished gem of a city. Those with political ambitions that are trying to gain their sucess with pessimism and fear should be ignored. "
