Truly, it was a “moving” experience! And one I can't wait to forget.
Ah yes, moving to another place. It took a good four weeks working to do it. After 23 years at the same residence, a lot of accumulation occurs. During the moving, things that were supposed to be moved, got thrown out. Things that were supposed to be thrown out, got moved.
I wasn't particularly “moved” by the “movers” - they were too expensive. I had four different movers and their prices ranged from $150 an hour to $500 an hour. I'm all for fair wages, but $500 an hour to move stuff! That's just not right. It's just another case of people taking advantage of people who have to be out of their residence by a certain date and have no recourse but to pay out exorbitant fees. Paying half a year's rent in moving expenses just to move is outrageous.
On the good side, a change of scenery is welcome. Out with the old and in with the new. The welcome mat is open at the new residence and that feels good.
It doesn't feel good knowing you've been taken advantage of. But that's life in this era of every man for himself. A buck's a buck no matter who has to be taken advantage of to get it.
Some things I found very peculiar when looking for a new residence was the fact that some residences were still being occupied by tenants, and other residences were a long way from being renovated and able to be lived in. Then there were landlords who were just taking applications. Boy, these landlords are something else. They do whatever they want, whenever they want. They all think they're so high and mighty. But who really paid for their houses three times over, but their tenants over a 20-year rental duration.
The bottom line on all this moving business is everyone is making out like a bandit but those who are moving.

I've rented my entire adult life not only for lack of enough funds to buy my own place, but for lack of time, money and energy to take care of my own place, but I also know what it is to put up with having your living space dependent on the whim of some rather unstable management at times.
If all goes well, in another month I will have taken the plunge and be in my own home -- mostly for lack of a decent and affordable place to rent in the area where I need to live and which takes pets. It's a little scary, but also very exciting.
I have moved from one rental to another five times -- and not once did I have trouble with the movers -- because the movers were my family, my friends and me. Maybe if I were moving across the country, I'd hire someone -- otherwise, I'm definitely the do-it-yourself type. You just have to start way ahead. I have more than a dozen boxes packed already, and moving is still a month away.
So, plan ahead, start early, do as much for yourself as you can, and know that there will always be a trade-off. You can whine that your landlord is an inconsiderate jerk, or you can whine that you have to do everything in your home for yourself. OR, you can be a renter who is glad to have someone else shoulder all the responsibilities of maintenance, or you can be a home-owner who is glad to be able to call your own shots in your own home.
I'm about to try the latter -- wish me luck! "
