State police are investigating the theft of 14 lawn ornaments that were later placed on an Owasco resident's lawn.

State police are trying to find the owners of 14 lawn ornaments that were left on an Owasco property owner's lawn over the weekend.
A Melrose Road resident found the unwanted guests on the lawn on July 11. State police said there are a variety of ornaments, all with Wal-Mart stickers on them. They believe a person likely stole them from one property and placed on another as a prank.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police in Aurelius at 255-2767.

" Given it is clearly a prank, I would think our law enforcement resources could be better directed to other crimes that require their attention. "

" Years ago, when I was a costume intern a the opera in Cooperstown, there was a rental house across from where the opera was housing the interns out in the countryside. This place had one of hose "lawn jockeys" -- you know, the little guy with a jockey cap holding out a lantern? Well, this one was black -- that is to say, African-American. Some of the other interns found that highly offensive. So, one night in the middle of the night, they sneaked across the street, cut the electric and stole the jockey. My ex was at that time my future husband and Technical Director of the opera. The other interns put the jockey in the hall outside our room -- what a startling discovery when we opened the door in the morning!

At the end of the summer, they returned the jockey (with regrets that they couldn't re-connect the electric) -- but not until after they had painted its face white. "
