Dog owners need to be taught responsibility

Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:03 AM EDT

Am I the only one that isn't deaf? If I can hear your dogs barking in our house/yard, you ought to be able to hear them in your house/yard. When you are outside, not paying attention to your dog, put him/her in the house. Stop walking past the dog, ignoring the reason for the barking. The constant barking indicates that you shouldn't have a dog because you don't know how to love or train it.
I have heard your dogs all hours of the day and night. If you're too lazy to get out of bed on the weekends to put the dog out and let them back in, get rid of the dog. It is on a schedule and doesn't know that it's Saturday or Sunday, only that they need to be let out and fed by a certain time each day. And when you come home, don't tie it up and just ignore it for everyone else to listen to that has worked all day and just wants to relax.

Do not let your dogs run loose. Contrary to what you think, living in the country is still part of Cayuga County, and there is a leash law/barking ordinance effective in the whole county, not just the city. I have heard the barking from the north end of Short Road, Cayuga Road, from around the corner of 5&20 as well as from the Old Turnpike Road.

I personally think the county should mandate a five-hour course provided by the SPCA at the owner's expense for all household members in dog training/management. All members pass the course, or no dog! No license should be issued/renewed until this course has been completed and should be taken as a refresher course each year.

And to you people who breed dogs - stop! The SPCA is full of animals that didn't ask to the here, but unfortunately, they had ignorant owners who didn't pay attention to them, didn't spay/neuter them (including cats), dropped them off on the roadside or put an ad in the paper because they didn't want to deal with them any more.

A final problem to air is you people that go out at 7-8 p.m. starting up power tools, revving engines and hammering. This is wind-down time from a long day at work. Be courteous of your neighbors.

" Well, at least in the City there are new ordinances that help people with loud/vicious dogs.

One part of the new odinance states a dog cannot bark for more than five minutes, and there is an increasing level of fines associated with each offense.

I like dogs, but I just cannot understand bad/neglectful owners. "

" Be for real you cant expect everyones dog to just shut up because you came home from work. If its not past 10pm who cares if a dog barks a little.
As long as its not barking non stop what is the complaint? "

" I think Ms.DEB needs to sound-proof her home better.
be quiet at 7 or 8 pm?? Many with kids in activities are just getting home about that time.
Right now 7pm is the best time to mow your lawn--still have sunlight and its not so hot!

Good thing she doesnt live near me and listen to the cows in labor for about 2 days straight! lol...
Or every house for 3 blocks surrounding has one or more dogs! when one barks it sets off a chain reaction!
I love where I live, noises and all--and no jerks for neighbors! "

" Yes, but, have you ever tried to call the Dog Officer? You don't get anywhere. If anything needs to be done, it's put on the victim, and that's after you've left 40 messages. Even a dog bite from an UNLEASHED dog that was reported did NOT result in any consequences to the dog owner.

And 8:00? We aren't even done eating dinner by that time. Many people have many different schedules so a little tolerance is needed to be neighborly. "

" There is such a thing as "chained dog syndrome" and it is a form of abuse. Look it up online, then call the dog warden and turn the abusers in so the poor animal can get relief from suffering. "

" 7-8pm? That's a little early don't you think? I would say 9pm. That's when most children are in bed. I do agree you should respect your neighbors, but 7-8pm is the only time some people can get anything done. I say 9 is suffice. "
