SYRACUSE -- A 27-year-old upstate New York man has admitted killing a 65-year-old woman last summer and raping another woman at an East Syracuse coin-operated laundry eight years ago.
Glen Shoop Jr. of Salina faces 40 years in state prison for his crimes -- 25 years for the murder of Carol Nelson last July and 15 years for the rape in 2000. Onondaga County Judge Joseph Fahey says Shoop will serve the sentences back-to-back. Sentencing is set for Aug. 11.
Shoop was linked to both cases by DNA. Police say Nelson was walking to a relative's house when she was attacked.
Nelson's family isn't happy with the deal because it allows for Shoop's eventual release from prison. They say he should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
