AUBURN - There will be three fewer athletic coaches working at the Auburn Enlarged City School District this fall.
The board of education Tuesday approved the layoffs of freshman head football coach Shawn Soloman, junior varsity field hockey coach Lenore Grillo and varsity field hockey head coach Amy Spin for the 2008-09 school year to adhere to a state-mandated contingency budget.
While teams will still be fielded for each sport, the layoffs may cause a reduction in student athletes participating, Superintendent J.D. Pabis said. Any reductions will be related to supervision mandates.
The layoffs are part of a district-wide effort to trim down spending about $593,000 to meet a state-regulated contingency budget in the wake of voters defeating the proposed 2008-09 school budget twice in May and in June.
Athletics is one area the district is looking to for funding reductions in addition to field trips, transportation, curriculum work, elementary summer school and co-curricular activities.
Pabis said the district is not ruling out additional layoffs within athletics. He said the district will evaluate spending and student interest in teams on a seasonal basis.
Board member David Lansford voiced his concern about how limited athletics will affect students who turn to sports as a main motivation to stay in school.
In other news:
* While the state Education Department has not notified the district yet, Pabis is expecting West Middle School to be designated as a School in Need of Improvement.
The district is using its “best educated assessment” that students in the students with disabilities subgroup at West did not meet adequate yearly progress this year based upon preliminary state assessment scores, he said.
Rather than wait for the state to designate West with SINI status #* which will happen in December #* Pabis is taking a proactive approach by requesting a state quality review team to look at what is being done at West Middle School and suggest areas the school can improve upon.
The Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services will also be brought in for assistance, he said.
* Auburn High School's student newspaper, The Lake Avenue Times, won the High School Press Day 2008 Silver Award from The Post Standard and the Newhouse School.
* The board scheduled a workshop for 6 p.m. July 29 at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building, 78 Thornton Ave., Auburn.
