An Auburn City Hall employee is facing criminal charges that she falsified business records for an event she never attended.
Deputy City Clerk Michele Godfrey, also known as Michele McNabb, 41, of 30 Augustus St., Auburn, was charged July 24 with second-degree falsifying business records after she was accused of submitting a false time sheet and mileage form for reimbursement totaling $51.38 which she was not entitled to, authorities said.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said the misdemeanor charge arose from an incident when Godfrey was allegedly spotted in her backyard at 1:50 p.m. on June 25, by her boss, City Clerk Debra McCormick, who was on her way to City Hall. Godfrey was supposed to have been at a training seminar taking place at Onondaga Community College at that time.

Even though it is believed Godfrey never went to OCC, she is accused of submitting the paperwork for the trip, claiming restitution for 76 miles traveled, a lunch and seven hours of work, Budelmann said.

In addition to the criminal charges, Corporation Counsel John Rossi said the city was conducting its own investigation into Godfrey's alleged misconduct, but said he could not elaborate until after the matter was resolved.

Godfrey's attorney, Richard Gunger, could not be reached for a comment.

Godfrey was arraigned in front of Auburn City Judge McKeon in Auburn City Court Monday, and was released on her own recognizance. Godfrey's next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 9.

" Yes "gonesouth" politics in Auburn are that bad! Evidently things in the clerks office have gotten so bad now, there is a note at the clerks office stating that marriage licenses can only be gotten on Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment only. "

" It's not a felony charge because the amount is only $51. The claim was filed weeks before the class occurred because city hall wanted to close out their records early and she was told to file then. When the time came for the class she could not attend because of a death in friends family. So she canceled class and took a comp time day. Because she did not remember to cancel to reimbursement pay she was charged. "

" Did anyone ask Debbie why she was driving by Michele's house at 1:50, when her lunch is 12:00 to 1:00? Who was watching City Hall? The part-time temp? "

" Probably because they are false accusations. Ask the "Citizen" to call the College and see if there was phone call to them cancelling the class because she knew she would not be able to attend. Bet she also never received money for attending, check the payroll records. Personal vandetta if you ask me. Ten to one odds the City gets sued over this one! "

" Can someone explain to me why she does not get a felony charge? The statute they are using does not specify any monetary amounts yet the owasco guy gets a felony while she gets a misdemeanor. Did not know the politics in and around Auburn where that bad. "
