HIT: To the Port Byron Central School District and the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Educational Services for working together for the benefit of students.
When Port Byron discovered that more students had been accepted into BOCES New Visions programs than the school had budgeted for, the easy way out would have been to “sorry” to the students who wouldn't be able to participate.
But everybody involved did right the right thing by working out a solution for financing.
MISS: To allegations that government workers in two municipalities essentially took money from taxpayers without authoritization.
Arrests have been made in the past week in both the town of Owasco and the city of Auburn.
In both cases, the defendant is charged with falsifying records.
Such criminal charges are troubling reminders that some workers - regardless of occupation - will always be looking for ways to steal from their employer.
And it's especially disturbing when the employer is a publicly financed agency, because then the ones getting ripped off are the taxpayers.
HIT: To Eric Allyn on becoming the third generation of his family to serve as chairman of the board of directors at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
After having served most recently as vice chairman, Allyn this week was elected chairman and will take over for David Smith, who is moving out of the area.
Allyn's father, William F. Allyn, served as board president from 1986 to 1988, and his grandfather, William G. Allyn, served in the same position from 1961 to 1964.
MISS: To the closing this week of the Corner Deli, a decades-long staple of the Fingerlakes Mall.
While restaurant management and mall officials were tight-lipped about the reason, it's never a good sign for the local economy to see a longtime business of any size close its doors, especially when we're faced with what is now officially being called a statewide recession.
