SKANEATELES - Do-it-yourselfers in this lakeside village might soon find their weekend project time limited.
The Skaneateles village board is holding a public hearing tonight on a proposed regulation that would limit hours for construction in the village.
The pending law would restrict construction to fall between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and legal holidays.
After a comment from a resident at a meeting last month on the proposal, village attorney Michael Byrne clarified the ordinance is aimed at construction, not noise. However, the guidelines are not just targeted to construction companies. Property owners making repairs also would be required to adhere to the regulations.
Anyone who works beyond the permitted hours might be cited and required to pay a fine determined by the Skaneateles Town Court.
This regulation would not apply to work done in enclosed structures.
Residents who cannot attend the village meeting can submit written comments to be included in the record regarding the proposed law.
The village addressed this issue after receiving a petition from 17 residents from West Lake Street. However, if the board approves such restrictions, they will affect all village homeowners, not just those who live on West Lake Street.
Currently, the village has no noise ordinance.
