Give in one hand, charge in the other

Saturday, September 6, 2008 11:34 PM EDT

After reading the article on the front page of The Citizen, Aug. 8, 2008, I feel I must respond to the mayor and city council.
My birth certificate tells me I am a senior citizen. This can be partly good and bad.

Good because many places give seniors a discount. Bad because seniors may have many costly expenses, medically, etc.

Where downtown could I buy a spool of thread, a set of sheets, baby gift, shower or birthday gift. One place - a grocery store - and free parking. I would love to shop weekly or monthly at the jewelry or furniture store or even the bank. I guess I could window shop, shopping at the mall is free parking.

Auburn Document, formerly Auburn Savings Bank, will give you a map of Auburn showing all the stores gone - back in the '40s and '50s - we have memories.

How will we show we're seniors? Give S/S number, birth certificates, driver's license and what cost for all this paper work.

Most restaurants downtown give a senior discount. Thanks guys!

Give in one hand, charge in the other. I just don't understand why you would even consider charging us.

Thank you Christopher Valdina for your input in The Citizen.

Seniors, stand up and be heard whether you shop downtown or not.

As Reagan said to Gorbachev -- “take down that wall.” I say to you -- take down those kiosks. I understand there are approximately 12 in parking lots around the city.

" The downfall of the Auburn downtown is the kiosks? Maybe it was urban renewal? If you ever get out to other cities parking kiosks are the thing of the future. They are last costly to maintain than hundreds of meters and eliminate the need for all these individual meters. Apparently you are living in the past and can't deal with the modern world but deal with it.
And senior citizens should not get discounts or tax breaks unless they are needy. I know many senior that are rolling in dough and don't need discounts or tax breaks. These discounts are the cause of higher prices and taxes for the rest of the world. If a senior is financially in need than they should get consideration. "

" I completely agree. Those kiosks are about the most ridiculous waste of money that has happened in Auburn in a long time. They are kind of a monument to waste!! When I was a kid, my mother would bring me shopping downtown, and you could barely walk up the sidewalks, there were so many people out shopping. It will never be that way again, sad to say. Remember stores like Noah's Ark, Leo's Toy Store, Martin's Jewelers, Auburn Pants Factory?? That was back when Auburn was a growing, bustling town. Now it's merely a suburb of the prison. "
