YMCA is great place to burn off calories

Although many people were out shopping on Black Friday, there were still a lot of people at the Auburn YMCA-WEIU who were trying to burn off the calories from a Thanksgiving feast. Historically, the Friday after Thanksgiving is always busy for us as members and guests want to let off some steam after being with their family for the whole day.

On Wednesday, a group of people came together in order to support Rich Hamberger, the Auburn High School boys varsity swim coach. Rich is suffering from a liver disorder and needs a transplant. Supporters got together and swam laps as a means to raise money for the expenses that go along with the transplant. Rich was there and it was nice to see him.

Dorothea Hughes and I challenged each other to raise money and swim. I took the high road by taking a flat fee just to get myself in the water. Dorothea swam for laps and completed 50, which meant that she was able to raise a good sum for Rich.

OK, you should know that I swam 10, and then I took the lazy way out and just climbed out and cheered Dorothea on.

There were also high school swimmers, former swimmers, Stingray swimmers and friends there to encourage everybody on and to participate. It was a great event and I am sure it was successful.

We wish Rich the best of luck and hope things go well for him. To me, this is just another example of the community getting together with the YMCA in order to help one of their own.

A gift certificate from the Auburn YMCA is always a great idea for a gift during the holiday season.

It can be used for a membership or for many of the programs that we offer here, such as personal training, future body, swim lessons, defensive driving or a massage.

Our massage area has changed a bit as it is now on the fourth floor and includes two massage areas. Joining Pam Kudla is Michelle Tumber. By having two therapists, we are opening up more hours for both members and the general public.

Call our membership desk to find out more about the hours and fees or check out all the information online. Gift certificates from the Auburn YMCA last for more than just a minute as they can give you a lifetime of health.

What better way to tell someone you love them than by giving them a gift certificate to the YMCA!

Be sure to come down soon and purchase yours.

As the weather worsens, more of our cyclists are coming inside to work out. Be sure to make a reservation for the class that you want so that you are guaranteed a bike. You may call the membership desk 24 hours ahead of time to make a reservation.

As the holiday season begins in full force, let us all be thankful for all that we have and all we are able to do, both in our families and here at the Auburn YMCA
