The Wednesday morning kitchen fire at the Kentucky Fried Chicken/A&W fast-food restaurant on Grant Avenue has been attributed to overheated grease behind a fry machine, the Auburn Fire Department said.
Assistant Chief Jim Lattimore said Auburn police and firefighters responded to the blaze at 9:48 a.m.
The first officer to arrive on the scene knocked down most of the flames with a dry chemical fire extinguisher while firefighters came in to finish off the blaze before it could do any more damage.
The grease fire was confined to the wall and no major damage was reported, Lattimore said. Firefighters remained at the scene to ventilate the building before employees began the cleanup process.
A manager for the restaurant said they would not reopen until Thursday morning at the earliest. Employees needed to clean the kitchen after the Ansul grease fire protection system turned on, and health and building inspectors will have to examine the building before it can re-open.
There were no injuries reported, and the only people in the building at the time of the fire were employees who were preparing food, Lattimore said.
