Syracuse-based Penn Traffic announced this morning that it will close its P&C supermarket location on West Genesee Street in Auburn.
The store, which employs 60 people, will shut down along with eight others on Feb. 7.

Other regional stores on the closure list include locations in Fulton and the Valley Plaza in Syracuse.

The company said they will attempt to assist affected employees.

"Closing any store is a difficult decision. We have a responsibility to our associates, customers and shareholders to continually assess each and every component of our business to look for ways to improve the health and well-being of our company. We’re grateful for the loyalty and hard work of the affected employees, and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers in these communities from our many other locations in the Syracuse area," company Chief Executive Officer Greg Young said in a press release.

" This is really frightening to think that so many more people are losing their jobs. I wish all the employees well and hopefully the job market will turn around before Auburn becomes a ghost town. "

" Telling u this is getting scary...how many more will lose their jobs? Feel very bad for those P&C ee's. Whether u like P&C or Tops - it was nice to have a choice wasnt it? I luved when Ames was open and b4 that we had two Kmarts...choice is dwindling...and so it the job market.... "

" when walmart came running into town, with cheap prices, cheap wages and no union, I predicted this within 1 year. So..I was wrong in the timing but right in the assumption. SO the next time you go to Walmart, where the prices are cheap and so is the labor, remember the loss of 70 jobs- good paying jobs with health benefits..... "

" So sad. We've shopped the P&C for almost 30 years in its various locations and will miss the wonderful employees who were always so helpful. "

" When I lived on that side of town I much preferred P and C over Tops. "

" It's not just Wal-Mart. For most of us who live on the west end of Auburn and outlying areas prefer Tops compared to P&C across the street. If you're ever on that end of town look at the difference in the traffic in the parking lots. "

" It's difficult to compete with Wal-mart, especially in a small market. "
