Ducks attacked in Hoopes Park

Auburn city officials want to place signs in Hoopes Park in an attempt to protect the local duck population after residents reported seeing youths throwing rocks at the animals over the weekend, killing a duckling and injuring its mother.

Two ducks swim in the Hoopes Park pond Monday afternoon.
City Manager Mark Palesh said that killing ducks outside of hunting season was illegal and that he wants to talk to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to get signs up stating those regulations by this weekend.

Ducks are protected by both state and federal conservation laws.

Palesh said he was made aware of the issue when a resident told him Monday that four youths were seen riding through the park on bikes, throwing rocks at the ducks Sunday.

“Not only is it illegal to kill the ducks, it's immoral,” Palesh said. “My daughter was just at the park playing with the mother duck and the babies. The mother duck would just come right up to her. When I get home and tell my daughter, she will be crushed.”

Auburn resident Bob Richardson, who told Palesh about the incident, said he was both mad and disgusted when he found out that someone had injured a mother duck and killed one of its ducklings.

“When I went to go feed the ducks, I found out someone had killed one of the babies and thrown rocks at the mother,” Richardson said. “This isn't the first time something like this has happened in the park. Residents have seen kids throwing rocks or breaking eggs at the park before.”

" Having moved away from Auburn a few years ago I am always trying to promote the positives of living in the city. But I am disgusted over this whole situation. These kids should be held accountable for an animal abuse charge. I am sure somebody in this city knows who is responsible. Do the right thing. You are doing these juvenile DELINQUENTS no favors! Remember...they kill animals first, then graduate to humans! "

" Shame on those irresponsible children. I hope they find them, and as punishment they have to do lots of community service, perhaps many hours of time at the SPCA. Supervised of course, so they don't attempt to hurt anymore poor innocent animals.
And as for the parents..don"t take this too lightly as this type of behavior can surely turn into alot worse in later years "

" No child should be allowed with out parent surpervison. The people who watched & did nothing are just as guilty as the kids doing it. Just goes to show you can't have anything nice there. "

" This is SO sad. Hoopes Park is one of the most beautiful places of this area. I do place blame on the parents. Not only is it cruel to deliberately harm animals... it can show there are other problems with the individual for doing such inhumane things. Parents are responsible for their children- bottom line.

Anya- Making the park available to only adults is not realistic. As a mother of a toddler living close to Hoopes Park I bring my son there all the time to walk, enjoy the beauty, and watch the ducks. The idea of making the park available to only adults takes the park away from the good youth of this area who do go there to enjoy the park for what it is... a beautiful place. It is not fair to the children of this area who do go there and enjoy it to be penalized and have it taken away for something someone else did. Not only that, but you're then looking at costs for someone to supervise the property to keep kids out. It's just not realistic. The community coming together to let everyone know that abuse to the animals or the park will not be tolerated is. "

Let's make a concerted effort to find these brats and prosecute them.

The cowardly adults who say nothing should be shamed.

Let's step up and get a description of these little terrorists! "

" The mother duck has yet to found she is
either hurt or worse there are 11 baby ducks in distress. The children that were throwing rocks I was told were older kids riding bikes no one saw them throw the rocks and injure the mother duck.A younger child went to one of the adults and told them what happened that person responded as well as other adults by then the older children took off, the police were called. If by the many adults who went to the aid of the mother and her babies and did get involved had not bothered to stop these youths. you would not see this in your local newspaper.Because the police were called and the local news paper involved.Killing a helpless animal raises a red flag to say the least.I know for a fact the many adults who go to that park care enough to get involved as they did that day.Hoops park is a park not a playground I am sure you can't watch your children every minute but as a parent you can teach them right from wrong. FSII, you forgot to blame Bush. He is/was the blame for everything.

I hope they make the punishment fit the crime. I can't imagine killing a baby duck and injuring the mother like that. How sad :( "

" FS 11

You are wrong. It is the parents fault. IF they can not provide proper supervision for their children then they should not of had them. That is exactly what is wrong with this society. Nobody takes responsibility for their actions anymore. The Police, Fire Dept. School System, County etc... Did not tell or ask anyone to have children so they can become responsible for them!!! Maybe if people would start taking responsibility for themselves and stop thinking society owes them something - things would change! "

" I'll put in SICKOS and Cherry Duncans comment for them, these poor misunderstood children have no where to go or any thing to do. The city should provide baby sitting services for these children. Their parents or parent can't be watching them every second of the day. Its everybodys fault, the school system, the city, the county, the police, the fire dept. Everybody but the PARENTS. The shame of it all is if someone did catch them and gave them a swift kick in the butt, the butt kicker would go to jail, not the hoodlum. Right SICKO and CHERRY? "

" How sad that people (adults and children a like) feel that throwing rocks at these innocent creatures is 'a good time'. I would be so ashamed if my child did this sort of thing. I was just at the park last week with my baby showing him how beautiful the park is and introducing him to the adorable little family of ducks. What are parents teaching their children these days? I'm speechless and disgusted over this article. Where are the morals and sensitivity we were taught as children? Do parents not teach their children how to be good citizens anymore? "

" Local adults have to not tolerate such behavior. If you see it happening, yell at the punks. If they don't stop or leave or if they are threatening, then call the cops. If the cops don't come asap, then call the newspaper and tell them the cops aren't responding to the problem of violent hooliganism and animal cruelty right in the heart of town. I wouldn't argue with a "sting" operation and tasering for any punk, no matter what age, who would kill a baby duckling, for cripes' sake! "

hardwords wrote on May 19, 2009 8:54 AM:

" These kids who throw rocks are rude and have no respect for the animls. Yesterday at the park when my family was walking around the park an unknown man was catching the little babies ducks. If this man worked for the City I would have loved to seen a badge, or something on him but we did not. My step father called the police about it because we had no idea what this man was doing. Now if you work for the city don't you think that you would inform the people about this. Taking the ducks out of the pond my have not been the best idea but why don't the city officals do something about the kids signs wont stop these kids. Putting the ducks in a safe area until they can protect themselfes wont be a bad idea but tell the community about what you are doing if you are the "Duck Keeper" inform the people at the park about what you are doing to keep these beautiful animals healthy and alive. "

He's a sneaky little punk"(5)"Except for a break-in-and entry, stealing a car and arson, He's never been in trouble before"(6)"What ducks?"(7)"Well, if those ducks were someplace else, they wouldn't have got killed, now would they!"(8)"Hoopes park?
