Our View: Hits & Misses

Monday, May 18, 2009 11:34 PM EDT

HIT: To all of the people, from city officials to local volunteers and community organization leaders, working hard to organize and execute the first Founders Day celebration in the city of Auburn.
The June 6 event will be packed with fun activities for families, with a special focus going to the 50th anniversary of Alaskan statehood, which has local significance because of Auburn native William Seward's work in purchasing the land that became Alaska.

A different Founders Day theme is planned for every year.

HIT: To the advancement of two NCAA men's Division I lacrosse teams from this region to the national semifinals in this year's championship tournament.

Both the Syracuse and Cornell teams earned Final Four spots with weekend victories. This region's lacrosse dominance is well-known, but this is a remarkable achievement - two of the top four teams at the highest collegiate level in the country are just a short drive away from here.

HIT: To the graduates of the local colleges in Cayuga County.

Cayuga Community College's commencement took place Sunday, and Wells College's Class of 2009 will receive degrees on Saturday. These students should be proud of their achievement, but they also need to work hard to put that education to good use. And hopefully many of them stay here to do just that.

MISS: To threats being made at local schools.

Auburn police reported making an arrest in connection with a bomb threat earlier this month at Auburn High School, and they've also been investigating a pair of cases at Owasco Elementary School.

Fortunately, police have said, the threats haven't been credible.

We hope people thinking about making such threats come to their senses and realize they are not going to be treated as silly pranks.

" The Founders Day sadly, is a MISS. It is rapidly turning into a planned political demonstration. Should the demonstration, NOT, occur, personally, I would be very happy for our fair City. But the politically motivated planners and head of the committee may be allowing their political position to rule the day. Why in the world, Alaska. Because of our tenuous relationdhip because Lincoln's Sec of State, once lived here? Not a great followup to Founders Day. If anybody knows about it. "
