High school sports are often activities that entire families enjoy together, whether it's watching or playing. This weekend, families are invited to support a local sports boosters program while enjoying a good time on the field.

Auburn athletic teams will benefit from Saturday's Family Fun Day at Holland Stadium. The event is a fundraiser to support Auburn's High School athletic teams and a day of fun with a dunking booth, bouncy house, a blow up obstacle course, chicken barbecue, music, volleyball tournament (sign up forms are available at the A.H.S. athletic office), children's games with prizes, raffles for a chance to win $10,000 and a 50/50.

The Auburn High School sports boosters organization is throwing a Family Fun Day. The event, which will feature various sports-related activities, games and food, is being thrown as a way to raise money for the school's varsity sports programs in tough economic times.
The Family Fun Day, which begins at 11 a.m. and lasts into the afternoon, will transform Holland Stadium into an activity center for all ages. Linda Mizro, one of the event organizers, said earlier this week that she would like to see this become an annual fundraiser to draw families to the field.
“We don't have one, main event during the year,” Mizro said. “We raise a lot of money through our concession stands, and through some of the merchandise we sell.”
Throughout the day, there will be a bounce house, obstacle course and a dunking booth with Auburn High coaches on the perch. There will also be music provided by a DJ, children's games and a chicken barbecue.
Mizro said the focus of the event is really to offer a family-friendly time. That means there will be things to do for athletes and non-athletes of all ages.
“(While planning), we were looking for something that could be family oriented, something creative and something we can carry on for other years,” she said.
There will be plenty of prizes on hand, as well. Kickers and shooters will have a chance to compete in field-goal kicking, half-court basketball shots, soccer goals and lacrosse shots. A coed volleyball tournament will take place on the grass, with the teams competing for a Chili's gift certificate.
On top of the competitions, there will be raffle prizes and a large raffle jackpot for up to $10,000 with a $100 buy-in.
Auburn High football players and cheerleaders will be helping throughout the day.
Mizro said all the money raised during the Family Fun Day will go to varsity sports. With school budgets tightening around the state and country, it is especially important for community support of programs like athletics, she said.
“We wanted to make sure the students had everything they needed,” Mizro said.
Just how much the sports boosters expect to make remains unknown. Mizro said there is not a specific money goal set for this event, as organizers just want to get it going.
She compared it to the popular Hall of Fame dinner that recognizes Auburn High athletes every year. At the beginning, no one knew who would come. These days, you have to stand in line to get a ticket, Mizro said.
“This is a total unknown,” Mizro said.
