Indians must pay the same as other citizens

Saturday, June 27, 2009 12:04 AM EDT

After reading the Sunday edition of The Citizen, I am inspired to write. Paul Simkin wrote a letter that I agree with and I am sure many others will too.
If the Cayugas want to live here and do business here, they must obey the same laws and pay for the same services we all do. It's how it is in the USA. We all balk at our high taxes, especially high in New York state. No, they cannot have it both ways. Pay the same as the rest of us citizens or move on.

Many of the other letters were good too. I read them with interest.

About the gun issue, George J. Smith wrote about, I would add that a gun safety course be taught to all at an early age.

When I went to school, we even had a gun club or rifle club and the participants brought their guns to school on club day on the bus. Today that wouldn't happen.

Education is the answer and respect for any gun. My father taught us that as did my husband to our children. There never was a problem and that was only 25 to 30 years ago.

I enjoyed “Our View” also, and very much agree.

" You can't have justice in this situation, any more than you could in the Middle East. Both parties have held the land, each in its own rights, too long. The people who live on the land now were not party to the reneging on deals done by long-ago people, which in no way negates the fact that long-ago people were scr*wed -- here or in the Middle East. All the conflicting and irreconcilable claims are valid, so no matter how you choose, someone is denied justice, someone is wronged. It's a no-win situation. "

" I wish the Indians could get some land and form their own state. They would have to worry about there own schools etc. It is true, our government years ago, ripped them off and it is a mess. Hopefully they will get a fair deal that wouldn't hurt anyone in NY or any other state. "

" They do use our services. Also the Iroquois in particular sided against us in two wars and lost both times. Finally the Iroquois took their land from other tribes by conquest about 400 or 500 years before we came to upstate New York. "

" If the NAs do not use our services they have no obligation to pay taxes as they are a sovereign nation. Do you have any idea what that is? "

" I don't doubt the atrocities committed by the U.S., but I see nothing wrong with what we used to play as cowboys and Indians. There is no disrespect meant, as there wasn't back then. Lighten up daydreamer. "

" I guess the kids now play cowboys and Native Americans. "

" Sorry, but NATIVE AMERICANS were here first. Europeans took their land away through the use of eniment domain and genocide. Then, when "given" land to live on, that was taken away as well. It is the greed of the U.S. that has created this situation in the first place. I thought useing the "I" word was prejudice. "
