The Auburn Doubledays scored first against the State College Spikes on Friday, but the home team put up the runs much more often in the Spikes' 11-3 win. Despite winning the first game of the series, Auburn has now lost its last two series.
The Doubledays scored two runs in the first inning on Brad Glen and Jack Murphy RBI singles, but the team's hitting became anemic after that, with just six cracks all night.
Lance Durham led the effort at the plate, with two hits.
The Spikes sent everyone in their lineup to the bags, with 14 hits and four walks overall.
Brian Justice (0-1) made his fourth appearance for the Doubledays on the mound, but lasted just 1 1-3 innings in the start after allowing five hits - including a Kyle Morgan home run - and three earned runs.
Steve Turnbull relieved Justice, working 3 2-3 frames, giving up three hits and just one run. The Spikes put up runs in each of the first three innings and racked up three more scores in the seventh, to which the Doubledays responded with one run in the eighth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback. James Lehman gave up six runs and five hits in his 2 2-3 innings on the mound, as the Spikes tallied four more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Maurice Bankston (1-0) threw five masterful innings for the Spikes, setting down after a rough first frame to last five innings.
He gave up all six hits and two early runs.
Auburn (5-9) heads to Batavia today to face the Pinckney Division-leading Muckdogs.
