Town of Niles could soon be wired for cable

Time Warner Communications may soon be installing cable in the town of Niles.
The Niles Town Board unanimously resolved Thursday night to grant Time Warner permission to start transmission line construction for phone and high speed Internet

The town's waiver request allowing the project goes before the New York State Public Service Commission on July 16.

A public hearing on the franchise agreement can be held after that date, which the town has tentatively scheduled for Aug. 6, its next regular board meeting.

The town map now shows seven houses in the northwest corner using Time Warner service and a cluster of homes in the northeast corner that Verizon Communications was going to offer its FIOS service.

Time Warner wants to put lines in along the western Skaneateles lakefront from the Cortland County town of Scott through Sempronius to Fire Lane 13 in Niles.

The company encourages residents along the lakefront to petition for the line to come through.

That section was the most probable area for the service because installation requires 20 customers per mile.

Town Supervisor Rick Slagle said that the line would be strung on the National Grid utility lines using existing poles. Time Warner has already obtained right-of-way clearance from National Grid.

Slagle also mentioned a joint project is in the making with Niles, Scipio and Genoa to provide broadband service through Clarity Connect to their residents.

" I cannot believe that the Town of Niles would okay for Timer Warner to run only near the lake. Old Salt Road is a very busy road with many tax payers on it. We should be offered this too. Our children deserve to do their research with high speed and we should have the same opportunities. Hopefully the Town of Nile will see this and make it right! "

" I think that the town should look into helping the people right around the corner on Old Salt Road- it is ridiculous that we do not have high speed service. We may not be on the lake, but we pay taxes and deserve the same opportunities. There are enough people on this busy road that Time Warner should be an option! "

" I too live in the town of Niles on Old Salt Road. It looks to me like we won't be getting the Time Warner. Only people on the lake? I have been trying for years to get cable and faster internet. I just had to get Direct TV because we were not able to get any signal once the digital transistion took place.

I was excited at first that we may be getting it, but once reading further, it looks like only people on the lake will be getting it. This is crazy! Like Ufreaks wrote, there is Verizon Fios all around us, and now they will also be able to get cable, and we are still in the dark.

The people that do have internet options, are going to be getting even more and we will still be in the ice age.

The joys of country living! "

" I live in Niles, and from the sounds of it they're keeping the line near the lake? 20 customers per mile??? Sounds like everybody in Niles WON'T be getting a line. More money down by the lake, huh? Verizon Fios is run approximately 1/2 a mile from my house, but wouldn't continue the line to me. (I stopped to inquire with the guys installing the line... No luck)I'm sure the spool was plenty big enough to make it too!
I guess I'll just keep Direct TV, and the NFL Sunday ticket! "

" I'm in the town of Springport, and totally agree with what 'guitardude62' wrote. The same applies to this town what he said about Sennett. "

" Well, that's great for the Town of Niles. I'm happy for them, I hope they get a choice between Verizon & TW Cable, so they aren't forced to accept one monopoly. Hey speaking of Time Warner and Verizon, are you listening? I live in the Town of Sennett, and guess what? You don't offer your DSL, FIOS, or cable services to potential PAYING customers. Folks on my road have been bothering both of you to provide service for us for YEARS. But you would rather give your money away to satellite companies and companies like Clearwire. The city of Auburn has a choice of your services. Why not all of Sennett? Every year I go to the NY State Fair and stop in to the Time Warner area, and all your salesman are ready to hawk their wares, until I tell them where I live and they have no answer to when they may run some cables down my street. Verizon has no answer either. My road runs right off of RT.5 and I am literally less than a mile from it. Apparently, the monopolies in power don't want to invest a mile or two of wire/cable to gain some long term customers. Again I say, some peoples money is greener than others apparently. "
