Please remember to keep the noise down

Monday, July 6, 2009 12:08 AM EDT

I would like to give a friendly reminder to all Auburnians coming and going after sundown now that the weather is nice. It being officially summer, we all leave our windows open day and night, however this means that whatever commotion is going on outside becomes more audible.
Please remember that most people are asleep at night and need to wake up in the morning, whether they are employees, parents, students in summer classes, or even little children and babies who need more sleep than adults. I am asking you to kindly keep the noise to a minimum; even a normal speaking voice at most isn't all that disruptive if it is not prolonged. What are disruptive are loud talking and singing, screaming, partying, loud laughter, fighting, loud stereos, and forceful and continuous slamming of car and house doors. It is possible to be active indoors and outdoors at night without causing excessive noise, and I thank those who are considerate enough to keep things quiet at night.

Sound can carry quite far, and if loud enough, it can be heard clearly down the street, or even several blocks away. There are few things at night that are worse than being woken up by loud noises or partying and not being able to get back to sleep. Please consider how you would feel if someone disrupted your sleep several times a week. Also consider how alarming it is to wake up to yelling and wondering if someone is in trouble, about to cause trouble, or if it is just someone playing around.

Most importantly, Chapter 210 of Auburn's municipal code is our city's official noise ordinance, so by law you are not permitted to make “loud, unnecessary, or unusual noise,” meaning noise that “annoys, disturbs, injures or endangers the comfort, rest, health, peace or safety of others within the City of Auburn.” Keep in mind that just because someone does not shout at you from their bedroom window and/or call the police on you does not mean that you have not woken us up.

" I put up with Auburn "NOISE" for many moons. Then I took the advice of Three Dog Night. I moved, "OUT IN THE COUNTRY". "

" I noticed the bat comment, I just figured you were keeping them for your various potions.

People should be respectful of their neighbors at all times. Just because it is day or night does not determine if someone is trying to sleep. There a re a lot of people in Auburn that work the overnight shift that deserve quiet, too. "

" justventing -- I do tend to call an authority about a dog left out to bark -- 99 times out of 100 it's the fault of the owners neglecting their poor animal. I will have to check to see if that law passed to make it illegal to leave a dog tied up more than a few hours -- it is not only neglience, but it can create "chained dog syndrome" from which dogs never fully recover -- it is a form of cruelty and abuse to leave a dog tied out for hours on end, not just a disturbance of neighbors (though it is also disturbing -- in more ways than one). "

" FS II -- LOL -- that's what I hear! Farmer Guy has lived in this area all his life and has told me many a colorful take about "Dodge City!" Now I find myself on the Comprehensive Planning Committee -- it's an interesting experience, let me tell you! "

" If you read Auburn sound laws it also states that if you can hear noise @ 15 feet you can complain. Obviously most people will not complain about lawn mowers, etc. Music however can be controlled, if you hear music and it bothers you complain. You have just as much of a right to live in peace and quiet as they have to play loud music, actually you should have more of a right, since they are the ones in the wrong. I live next door to a person with a pool, I don't like hearing all that screaming and yelling either, but I'll live with it, until they start with the music, then I'll complain. Ever notice if you are the person causing the problems it does not bother you? For example YOUR kids yelling or YOUR dog barking dosn't bother you but does bother your neightbors. "

" FG, were you living in Genoa when it was called Dodge City, the bars stayed open to 4am and the guys from south of Cayuga County came to Genoa to drink because their bars closed at 2am. Let me tell ya, there were some great battles, and if Valerie doesn't like noise, she would have never made in Genoa. "

" Valerie, maybe you should TALK to the neighbor that you are obviously having trouble with. Putting a letter in the paper could only fuel the fire. "

" Moving to the country won't help. There are no noise ordinances in agricultural districts, where farmers have to get up early and during certain times of the year, work late with lights on the tractors. And if you live anywhere near the Genoa Hotel when they have a band, forget it! (The room is big enough you could hear accoustic without an amp, but they feel the need to keep the neighbors awake until 2 AM with the thumping bass -- wasn't like that when I moved in. Back then they just had regular fisticuffs, but it was quiet enough down the street....) "

" Valerie, are you kidding? move out to the country. Prolonged talking, kids screaming, kids play and do that, people tend to somtimes talk loud or god forbid laugh out loud.People have family gatherings in their back yard, so they should wisper and not have fun. Sure people may tend to get loud when their having fun or young teenagers may get the music loud, but for the most part I'd say people respect their neighbors, but you want to turn out the lights and roll up the sidewalk at around 9pm and the city of Auburn should be shut down. Read the city code, You could walk down the street in a pair of high heels and would be breaking the law, with your heel clicking on the sidewalk, think about it. Valerie, I was wondering if you have any children? "
