AUBURN -- A 29-year-old Savannah man who pleaded guilty to tricking a cell-phone salesman into giving him phones he wasn't entilted to was sentenced in Cayuga County Court Tuesday to a three-year conditional discharge and 150 hours of community service.
Ryan Breen, of 1233 Wiley Road, admitted on April 28 that he convinced a Cingular salesman at Wal-Mart that he was employed with the same company and needed more than 150 cell phones to make upgrades for customers.
Breen, who was fired by Cingular prior to the thefts, said he used his inside knowledge of the trade to convince the salesman they were both employed by the same company.
As a condition of his sentence, Breen paid back the $29,310 that he stole from Cingular.
Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann previously said he did not know how Breen came up with the money.
Two days after Breen pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in Cayuga County, he was arrested in Wayne County for allegedly scamming $233,000 in reimbursements from a medical insurance company for unrendered services.
Breen was charged with forgery and grand larceny for allegedly using the name of his former massage therapist to sign off on 113 United Healthcare Insurance claim forms.
That case is still pending presentation to a Wayne County grand jury.
