SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse teenager is going to state prison for 18 years to life for shooting a man in the back while burglarizing his home last October.
Va Tell Baptista told the family of victim Nathaniel Jamison that he was sorry for the killing.
Caroline Jamison told the 17-year-old in court Friday that she hoped he endured the same suffering her family has since her brother's death.
Police said Jamison's murder capped a 24-hour crime spree by Baptista, who also stole a laptop computer and used a Molotov cocktail to firebomb an unoccupied house. In exchange for his murder plea, authorities dropped arson and burglary charges.
Defense lawyer Marsha Hunt said Baptista chose to admit his guilt to avoid the risk of a longer sentence.
