An Auburn man was arrested early Friday morning after police said he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's home, beat her, and threatened her with a knife.
At about 1:36 a.m., Auburn Police Department officers were dispatched to an apartment in the Brogan Manor housing complex at 37 Olympia Ave., Auburn, following reports of a burglary and assault that had just occurred.
Through conversations with the victim, police said they learned that her ex-boyfriend, Nathan Crawford, 26, of 99 Washington St., front apt., Auburn, had entered her apartment by removing an air conditioner unit and crawling through the window. Once inside, Crawford is accused of beating the victim, hitting her on the head, then brandishing a knife and threatening her with it.
According to police, the phone rang in the middle of the assault, with Crawford answering. The victim allegedly yelled, "Call 911," hoping the person on the other line heard her. Crawford then hung up the phone and fled the scene before APD officers arrived.
The victim was treated at Auburn Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and was later released. She previously had an order of protection issued by Auburn City Court against Crawford.
Officers located Crawford at his residence at about 3:44 a.m., when he was arrested without incident. He is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal contempt and one count each of first-degree burglary, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies. He was also charged with the misdemeanors of second-degree menacing, third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and petit larceny.
He was arraigned Friday in Auburn City Court and held at the Cayuga County Jail on $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond.
