MIDDLESEX - A 32-year-old western New York woman has been charged with manslaughter after a 1-year-old boy died in her care earlier this year.
Yates County authorities say Shari Cotroneo of East Bloomfield was charged Tuesday with manslaughter for recklessly causing the Feb. 5 death of 1-year-old Garren Smith of Middlesex.
They say Cotroneo was baby-sitting Garren at her home in Middlesex when she called 911 seeking assistance because the boy was unresponsive.
The boy was pronounced dead later that day at a Rochester hospital.
Sheriff Ronald Spike says forensic evidence led to the charge, but he wouldn't reveal the cause of death.
Cotroneo pleaded not guilty at her arraignment and was released on bail.
Middlesex is 35 miles southeast of Rochester.
