People don't need so many laws

When is the government going to stop shoving new laws down our throats?
Every time you turn around someone tells us you can't do this, you can't do that. You have to wear a seat belt, you have to wear a helmet to ride a bike, you can't use a phone when your driving (except the cops). You have to wear a life jacket in a boat.

Whatever happened to our choices to do what we think is right for ourselves. If you don't wear a seat belt in a car and you get hurt in an accident (oh well, that was your choice). At least you had a choice and wasn't forced to do something.

I realize that all these laws are to protect people, but it should be up to you if you want to follow them (and not be forced to). Maybe I'm wrong, but I think there are a lot of people that feel the same way.

Leave us alone and let us do what's good for ourselves. I am sure when you were young your mother wasn't sitting on your shoulder saying do this, don't do that. She let us learn by doing, or by mistake, whichever.

" there are so many new laws, and especially ones that seem petty and foolish because their such a great source of income. Our state and local authorities love nothing more than to have a new law to "CRACK"down on around a holiday and generate some awesome fine collection and the states "COURT FEE", I feel so much safer. And thank you jim for noting that almost always these new laws to save lives include a "LAW OFFICER EXZEMPTION" "

" When people stop behaving like dangerous idiots, I suppose that's when we can start eliminating these laws. But people consistently fail to demonstrate basic common sense, and every time you think they couldn't possibly come up with any dumber behavior -- someone does. "

" Jim. I agree we may have too many laws, but the examples you site are good laws in my opinion, especially the cell phone, since it may protect other motorists. You might wish your loved one had a seat belt or life jacket on if a tragedy could have been prevented by a law they followed. I think it's evident the better part of this community, and nation for that matter, doesn't know or care what's good for them. Look at our diet, lifestyle , health, violence, abuse, neglect. Face it, we make a lot of bad choices and a few laws that promote good choices might actually save someones life. "

" Jim, M'man. Perhaps (but only PERHAPS) letters such as yours would have greater effect if were sent to your elected servant of the people who is shoving all this "PROTECT ME AGAINST ME" legislation down your throat. And how many of those "MOTHERING" politicians did you help put into (or return to) office this past Election Day? If any, then you have no one to blame but yourself for these harrassment laws you so despise. By the way, these types of laws are brought on by a complete lack of common sense. When
the people cannot practice common sense, it must be legislated. Sure, government could leave us be, but then the carnage would be horrific. "
