An app developed by a Saratoga Springs High School senior to assist residents and visitors find available parking spots is the winner of a contest hosted by U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Collin Bolles has been selected as the champion of Stefanik's Congressional App Challenge. His submission, an app called "Parking Assistant," aims to help drivers find parking garages and lots in Saratoga Springs.

The app, which uses a Google Maps interface, indicates where parking lots are located in Saratoga Springs and provides drivers with information about how many spaces are available.

The map icons are color coded to indicate a range of how many spaces are available. If the icon is green, there is more than 75 percent availability. An Orange icon signals that there are 25 to 75 percent of spots available for vehicles. If the icon is red, less than 25 percent of spaces are open.

Bolles' app also includes a form to help users find the best parking lot based on their needs. They can rate certain factors based on importance, including distance from origin, distance from destination and parking availability.

Once the users complete the form, the app directs them to a lot.

In a video demonstrating the app, Bolles said it is still in development.

"I will continue to refine the app and home to someday implement the assistant into my hometown of Saratoga Springs," he said.

As the winner of the Congressional App Challenge, Bolles' creation will be displayed in the Capitol in Washington. The app will also be featured on the Congressional App Challenge website

This is the third year of the Congressional App Challenge, which was created to boost science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Stefanik, R-Willsboro, is a co-chair of the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Caucus.

"The North Country is home to many gifted students and I am confident that Collin's entry will help inspire other young people in NY-21 to pursue STEAM education and careers," she said.
