If the internet is to be believed, Roman Reigns will face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34.

There are reasons why such speculation shouldn't be taken seriously. After all, WrestleMania 33 hasn't been held and WrestleMania 34 is more than a year away. A lot can happen — and change — in a year.

But what if this happens? Why would WWE book such a match? The thinking is that it would be done to boost Reigns and transform him into the next John Cena — WWE's top guy and a babyface.

Good luck with that.

There are problems with this — if it's accurate. Reigns isn't exactly a fan favorite at the moment and that likely won't change over the next 12 months. It's not that he's a bad performer or that he's a terrible character. The fans caught on to what WWE was trying to do before and they turned on him. Whether it was fair or not, here we are. Reigns gets booed, no matter what he does.

Reigns has what it takes to be the top guy. He certainly has a better move set than, say, Brock Lesnar. He has charisma. He's not the best talker, but he doesn't need to be. His work in the ring speaks for itself.

The other issue here should be obvious: Why should Roman Reigns face Brock Lesnar to become the next John Cena? Shouldn't Reigns face ... John Cena himself?

Cena, who's apparently shifting to more of a part-time role, will be part of the WrestleMania scene for years to come. There's no way WWE will stop using him in a big spot at WrestleMania. Sure, Lesnar has crossover appeal into the world of mixed martial arts and sports in general. But Cena has pop culture appeal. He's in movies. He's on television. More and more people outside pro wrestling know who he is. So why not have Reigns face Cena instead of Lesnar?

It was Ric Flair who said, "To be the man, you gotta beat the man." Beating Lesnar does nothing for Reigns long term. Beating Cena, however, would be a passing of the torch, at least in WWE's view. Would it matter to fans? For the most part, no. But if this is the direction WWE wants to go in, they should put Cena, not Lesnar, in that match against Reigns.
