This year's WrestleMania is the 33rd, and WWE just continues to pile the superlative taglines onto its annual spring supercard. In addition to "The Showcase of the Immortals" and "The Grandest Stage of Them All," this year WWE's creative geniuses gifted us a new one: "The Ultimate Thrill Ride." One can easily imagine Vince McMahon himself growling the uninspired phrase to his marketing team with a circus promoter's hand wave, as if he can simply will more prestige onto what many have already called his greatest creation.
Or maybe McMahon realized he needs more zip on what's become a death march of a show. Last year's WrestleMania was almost seven increasingly dull hours, and at 13 matches with a week to go, this year's threatens to exceed that. Featured performers Samoa Joe, Sami Zayn, American Alpha and Luke Harper, for instance, are still without matches. So let's hope The Rock is busy April 2.
Another way McMahon and WWE could sustain WrestleMania viewers' interest — and live up to their new tagline — is deliver some decent surprises at this year's show. Here are a few possibilities:
