Local music teacher Jim Van Arsdale dug the band Mixtape so much that when drummer Shelly Major asked him to recommend a guitarist, he nominated himself.
"We hit it off right away," said Van Arsdale, who had previously been on a break from club performances.
Major and Van Arsdale are joined by Anna Luisi on keyboards, Guy Turchetti on bass and Brad Ellis on acoustic guitar in the band, whose cover catalog spans Van Halen and Journey to Van Morrison and Paramore. Each member of the quintet sings lead on different songs, and harmonizes with the others.
Because the band has about 70 songs in its repertoire, it also takes requests, Van Arsdale said.
"We specialize in fun music people can dance and sing along to," he said.
The band has been in its current form for about a year, playing a few times a month in its members' home bases of Auburn, Seneca Falls, Waterloo and Canandaigua.
"We do it because we love it," Van Arsdale said. "Not because we're getting rich."
