State police said one man was killed and another critically injured early Wednesday morning in Skaneateles when their minivan crashed into the side of tractor trailer, passing completely underneath it and out the other side.

The front-seat passenger of the demolished van, Patrick J. Hallinan, 26, of 5611 Stonesthrow Road, Elbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, Michael V. Stern, 24, of 679 Masters Road, Elbridge, was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with head injuries. Stern was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

In a news release Wednesday afternoon, police said the 2004 Toyota Sienna was northbound at a high rate of speed on Jordan Road when it struck the tanker portion of a 2011 Kenworth truck that was making a left turn from Stump Road onto Jordan Road. The Toyota went underneath the truck and came to a rest a short distance away, police said.

The driver of the tanker truck, James T. Whaley, 50, of Pulaski, was not injured in the crash, police said.

The cause of the crash was being investigated.
