The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of thefts that have plagued the northern half of the county over the past two months.

According to statement released Wednesday, deputies said both the sheriff's office and state police have received dozens of complaints from residents in Cato, Ira, Sterling and Victory reporting cars being rifled through and cash, electronics and tobacco products being stolen from vehicles.

The thefts, from vehicles parked in driveways and garages date back to early December, with one reported as recently as Feb. 6, police said.

Investigators decided the larcenies were likely connected after witnesses reported seeing a light-colored minivan — possibly a Chrysler — near some of the incidents in both December and February, deputies said.

The sheriff's office asks anyone with information on the larcenies or the owner of the van to call Detective Steve Smith at 253-3545 or submit a tip at cayugacrime.com. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
