Veterans are honored during the 2014 H.R. Wilson Golf Tournament.

The HR Wilson Memorial Golf Tournament/Fundraiser is taking over the Wells College Golf Course in Aurora once more in order to raise funds for the national veterans nonprofit Homes For Our Troops.

Though the golf tournament, which begins Saturday, Aug. 19, is no longer accepting new teams to play, the opening ceremonies honoring sponsored veteran Luke McDermott will take place 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the golf course on Route 90. It is free and open to the public.

Rick Wilson, who organizes the tournament fundraiser in memory of his father, said McDermott is from Clayton, N.Y. Funds raised will help build an accessible home for McDermott, who, according to the Homes For Our Troops website, lost both his legs in Afghanistan while serving as a Marine corporal in the First Battalion.

The reason opening ceremonies are Sunday and not Saturday is because McDermott is a member of the U.S. National Sled Hockey team, and will be coming back from a training in the Midwest, Wilson said. An escort motorcade with motorcycles and classic cars will ride into the village to the golf course Sunday. Military ceremonies will be performed and Cayuga County Treasurer Jim Orman will be the morning's keynote speaker. Other elected officials are expected to attend, honoring McDermott.

Wilson said those interested in attending should plan to get to the college campus prior to 9:30 a.m. in order to see the motorcade drive in.
